Paper Mario and Other New Super Mario Games Reportedly Coming to Switch in 2020
A new Paper Mario game is likely coming to the Nintendo Switch, but which other major Super Mario titles are in the works?
That same report from VGC which revealed that classic Super Mario games are coming to Switch also suggested that a new Paper Mario game and other new Super Mario titles are set to debut on the Nintendo Switch in 2020.
Sadly, the report in question does not reveal much more information on that subject. The site’s unnamed sources just indicated that there are several Super Mario games in development for 2020 and that one of them will be a new Paper Mario installment. Beyond that, we don’t have much official information to go on.
As was the case regarding the Super Mario remasters, Nintendo issued a no comment statement regarding this report.
Just as we noted in the case of that report, there are enough reliable sources backing these rumors up for us to confidently treat these rumors as something worth speculating on. As always, though, you should wait for Nintendo to confirm these reports before you break out the champagne. So far as that goes, we’ll confirm this story just as soon as they do.
For now, though, let’s begin that speculation. A new Paper Mario game certainly seems like a realistic prospect at this point. We haven’t really gotten a new Paper Mario game for consoles since 2016’s Paper Mario: Color Splash for Wii U, so it makes sense that Nintendo would choose to revisit it now. The fact that Color Splash was met with some rather mixed reactions certainly serves as even more incentive for Nintendo to bring the franchise back in a big way.
While we’re certainly looking forward to the idea of a new Paper Mario game, it’s those other Mario games that Nintendo is working on which really piques our interest at this moment. Assuming that there hasn’t been some miscommunication and that some of the aforementioned Mario remasters don’t count as the games that Nintendo intends to release this year, we’re kind of at a loss in regards to what those games could be.
Super Mario Odyssey 2 is certainly a candidate considering that Breath of the Wild 2 is in development, but we’d be shocked to learn that it’s going to be revealed and released in the same year. On that note, assuming this information is true, it makes sense that Breath of the Wild 2 may not be released in 2020 in order to make room for these Super Mario titles.
A new Mario Kart game is certainly a possibility given the success of the Mario Kart 8 port for the Switch. We suppose that a new Mario Kart Golf game also isn’t out of the question, and there’s always the chance we’ll get a new 2D-style Super Mario game. Even a new Dr. Mario game is potentially on the table at this point.
Once again, though, we’ll be sure to bring you all of the official information regarding these Mario games as soon as that is available.
