Ghost of Tsushima: Legends Update Adds Co-Op Multiplayer Mode
Ghost of Tsushima: Legends features a new multiplayer mode that could have easily been a separate game.
Sony and developer Sucker Punch have revealed a new co-op multiplayer mode for Ghost of Tsushima called Ghost of Tsushima: Legends.
“Legends is an entirely new experience — it’s a separate mode that doesn’t follow Jin or the companions from his journey, but instead focuses on four warriors who have been built up as legends in stories told by the people of Tsushima,” reads a post from Darren Bridges, Senior Game Designer, Sucker Punch Productions, on the PlayStation Blog. “Ghost of Tsushima’s single-player campaign focuses on an open world and exploring the natural beauty of the island, but Legends is haunting and fantastical, with locations and enemies inspired by Japanese folk tales and mythology and an emphasis on cooperative combat and action.”
Describing Legends as an “entirely new experience” may actually be selling it short. Essentially, Legends offers an ambitious multiplayer mode that sees 2-4 players join through online matchmaking or custom parties. Once you’re in the game, you’ll be able to choose between four classes: Samurai, Hunter, Ronin, or Assassin. Each features “unique advantages and abilities,” but Sucker Punch hasn’t yet revealed what those are.
Legends offers two different ways to play based on the number of participants. With two players, you’ll be able to take on a “series of co-op story missions that escalate in difficulty.” Sucker Punch notes that these missions build on the “foundation of combat from the single-player campaign” but offer “magical twists” and other new elements designed to take advantage of the presence of an additional player.
If you go into Legends with four players, you can participate in new “wave-based survival missions” that pit you against “the toughest enemies Tsushima has to offer.” Said enemies feature a mix of foes that are already in the game as well as some new creations which emphasize the mode’s mystical elements.
There will also be a special four-player raid added to the mode “shortly after the launch of Ghost of Tsushima: Legends,” but there aren’t many details available regarding that content just yet. However, it sounds like it will be designed to challenge parties of four that have completed the rest of Legends‘ content.
Ghost of Tsushima: Legends will seemingly require all participants to have a PlayStation Plug account as well as (obviously) an active internet connection. There’s no word on its exact release date, but it should be available as a free download sometime during the Fall of 2020. Until then, you can just watch this debut trailer for the mode over and over again:
We previously praised Ghost of Tsushima developer Sucker Punch for releasing a single-player update that featured fascinating new difficulty modes, but this upcoming co-op update is on another level. It’s all the more reason to check out one of the best games of 2020 as well as one of the PS4’s best exclusives.
