Yeah, but Petrocelli was mostly detecting when he wasn't building the house he never finished (and never got very far with, for continuity reasons).

I think if you can throw in The Professionals as 'detectives' then CHIPs isn't a stretch. And Petrocelli was a lawyer!

Picknmix - I liked Harry O, but Baretta sucked, as did Petrocelli and Quincy. In fact Quincy was so awful, it was compulsive viewing. The CHiPs guys weren't detectives and Ironside was well established by the late sixties (rather than the seventies - though it is interesting to watch Greg Morris dress increasingly more 'jive' throughout the seventies episodes).
McCloud was a disappointment, really, given that Dennis Weaver was a very capable actor and the character was based on the Clint Eastwood movie Coogan's Bluff, which isn't too bad.

No Longfellow, Harry O, Baretta, Police Woman, CHIPs, McCloud or Ironside? To mention just a few.

And of course DCI Gene Hunt - Yup I know he isnt really a 70s copper but he could stand his ground with Regan and co as far as drinking competitions and 'accidently making suspects...fall down the stairs' stakes go.
