Torchwood: season three just one week long?
Simon Brew
A radical approach for Torchwood's third season has been confirmed: and, as feared, there are far fewer episodes to look forward to.
It’s got to be slim pickings for science fiction fans on the BBC in 2009 if the latest rumours surrounding the fate of Torchwood’s third series are to be believed. With already the number of Doctor Who episodes on our screens being knocked down from 14 to three next year, it now seems that Torchwood will be down to five episodes in total. And what’s more, the plan is to broadcast them over the course of just one week.According to an interview given with the US TV Guide magazine, executive producer Julie Gardner said that it would be more like a mini-series, with one main story arc holding the five episodes together. It certainly sounds like an attempt to break the American market to us, which is perhaps why TV Guide got the announcement first.
Gardner also went on to confirm that John Barrowman was returning as Captain Jack Harkness, and that the five episodes were set to be broadcast in Spring 2009. Gardner also told TV Guide that fans “will be pleased with the casting”, which should be interesting given how season two ended.
Further episodes of Torchwood in 2009 haven’t been ruled out, incidentally, even if there is a whiff of lots of eggs being placed in this one particular basket…
