US Spaced remake canned?

Is this the news that Spaced fans have been waiting for? Quite possibly...

Deadline Hollywood  is now reporting the news that the vast majority of fans of the UK edition of Spaced wanted to hear: that the American remake is dead in the water.

The remake, which was being handled by McG (the man who directed the Charlie’s Angels movies, and the upcoming fourth Terminator film), had attracted criticism from the likes of Simon Pegg, Jessica Hynes and Edgar Wright, who had not been involved with it in any shape or form. Pegg, infamously, issued a statement of his own against the remake, that you can read here.

However, according to the Deadline Hollywood story, the American version has been turned down after a pilot episode was produced. If true, it brings to an end one of the less pleasing attempts to remake a programme on the other side of the channel.

The fact that got most people’s backs up, including those of the creators of Spaced, is the sheer lack of courtesy of it all. That Pegg, Wright et al were all-but-powerless to stop a potential remake was staggering, although there’s a strong argument that their statements – that have been widely reported on the Internet – have had some influence over the final decision.

Now if we can just persuade them all to make another series, or even a one-off special, then the day could just be complete for Spaced fans…
