Misfits episode 6 review

Madeleine York

A superb end to a terrific series: the Misfits finale has plenty of tricks up its sleeve, discovers Madeleine...

Published on Dec 17, 2009

This was an unexpected and courageous end to what has been a fantastic debut series of a show that must return for more (or I’ll have stern words with E4). We were treated to an episode that felt like a one-off special; a self-contained story in which the misfits battled against a rival tribe, the ‘Virtue’ clan, a puritanical youth group on a mission to brainwash teenagers into living a chaste life, a bit like the Silver Ring Thing in the States.

Of course it wasn’t a battle for battle’s sake. It was there to create a reason for the most shocking of conclusions: Nathan’s death, and resurrection. Hands up who saw that coming?! All jaws were on the floor in my household, I don’t mind telling you.

Nathan, in an heroic speech delivered from the terrace of the community centre, spoke out in defence of teenagers being screwed up and tried to will them all out of the trance caused by “Derren Brown voodoo mind shit”. He looked over his people, his defenceless comrades who had been sucked into the beige-wearing tribe and he yelled, heartfelt: “It breaks my heart! You’re wearing cardigans!” In a last passionate moment he fell into a tussle with the lead voodoo girl and, with Simon unable to hold onto him, ended up tumbling to his death by gruesome impalement on the community centre railings. His death breaks the spell and sets everybody free from the trance.

The scenes following the death were fantastically done, showing the misfits genuinely grieving for their lost pal, especially Kelly, who has been growing closer and closer to Nathan in a rather unlikely romance. Lauren Socha was lovely and touching as Kelly watching the DVD that Simon had made for her, showing Nathan in all his glorious larks from the past couple of weeks of community service. I actually had a tear in my eye along with Kelly, aghast at the possibility of this being the end of the lead character and therefore, quite possibly, the end of the show.

Then came that crucial panning over the cemetery, which was when the penny dropped. Our hero figure who had sacrificed his life for the cause was stuck six feet under, waking up, and realising his superpower was the ultimate one of all: immortality.

Did he panic? Well, a little bit, yes. Soon, with his good nature and ability to make the best of a bad situation, he plugged himself into the iPod Kelly had so sweetly tucked into the coffin at the funeral, and started chilling out to Blur’s To The End.

And it does, indeed, look like we’ve made it to the end. But there is so much more to come. Finishing the series with a scene within Nathan’s coffin, we can only look forward to the start of the second series which will somehow get Nathan outta there and into some more brilliant trouble above ground.

So, our hero is immortal. Good job he wasn’t cremated.

Misfits airs in the UK on Thursdays at 10pm on E4 and 11pm on E4+1, with repeat showings the following Wednesday at 11 and 12pm.

A great finale, but I finally guessed what Nathans power was when we witnessed his death. I couldn't believe they could kill off such a central character without revealing his power. Also, in the episode focussed on Curtis, we were given a clue regarding Nathans power when Curtus saw him Nathan outside the centre at the memorial to all the other misfits who had been killed. Nathan being the only one who had survived. I look forward to the new series!

Good spot Misterjingo. Personally I felt this episode was a bit weak, but considering how excellent I thought the 5th episode was I am aware that it might struggle so ain't disappointed. I also thought it highly probable that Nathan was going to wake up after seeing him impaled on the railings, just pleasantly surprised that they left it so long and closed on him buried alive. I just can't wait for this show to return! As I have said before this show has been the best British TV I have seen all year (and it has had some stiff competition) and possible the best TV of the year full stop, if it doesn't get an arm full of BAFTAs then they are a fix.

Realy enjoyed season 1 of Misfits and Nathan’s powers being shown in the end of this episode made me laugh so hard- his face looking around the coffin and haply plugging in his I-Pod with out panic was brilliant- Maybe he will escape with help from the masked BMX bandit who can rescue him when he is in trouble? Is a wild guess but its one im putting out there!! Question: I thought the girl falling to her death broke the course?

I have a feeling that Nathans escape will be initiated by a certain Kelly visiting his grvae (at some point) and hearing his thoughts...

I've learnt 2 very important things today: 1) Den of Geek is very addictive and I should show more self-restraint. 2) I should definitely watch Mis-fits as its broadcast and not wait to watch it On-Demand. Oh well, Its still one of the best TV surprises of the year! AB :)

I ain't sure about Kelly it seems to obvious.... I am curious about BMX bloke as he seemed a bit random in a deus ex machina way.

BMX bloke is interesting. Perhaps either Curtis from a future episode, or more tantalising, the guy that was murdered in the frst episode? He was caught in the storm too... who knows what power was bestowed upon him. His seemingly early demise might not be the end of his story.

Great ending. Maybe not the best episode of the series but still better than a lot of other TV out there. It showed that the group still has reasons to stay together even if the eventual end of their community service should come. A few points. 1) It was definitely the girls death that brought everyone back to reality. 2) BMX guy is definitely a set up for the next series. 3) Simon is now tied with Nathan as the most interesting character with Kelly not far behind. The scene with Simon holed up with his frozen girlfriend (in his mind anyway) was eerie to the max! Also when Nathan visited Kelly I think they did justify both the reason why Nathan might be falling for her and give insight into why he acts up. 4) Great news about second series! All-in-all its been very well written and made the unbelievable very believable!

I'm also glad about the 2nd series :-) --> http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009/dec/17/misfits-second-series-e4 --> I watched Misfits because of the review in DoG! I saw the first episode, thought it was a little weak, and didn't bother again until this site kept saying how great it was. Thank god for 4 On Demand...
