Misfits episode 1 review

Madeleine York

So then: can E4 deliver a British superhero series that's worth tuning in to? Madeleine reviews the first episode...

Published on Nov 13, 2009

"Woah! The probation worker's gone mental!" was my absolute favourite line of the first episode of a truly hilarious new drama, and it was uttered by the guy with all the best lines in the script. Nathan, played with green-eyed mischief by Robert Sheehan, injected a very Shaun Of The Dead-ish, tongue-in-cheek tone to the goings-on (think of that Shaun line "Ohh, he's got an arm off!") and made sure the whole thing was firmly comedic and never too sincere.

Nathan's the self-appointed ringleader of a group of ‘yoofs' doing community service together - painting benches, scrubbing graffiti, the works - when they get caught up in a massive hail and lightning storm that ends up charging them with all sorts of absurd superpowers, apart from Nathan who hasn't established his yet. The moment of impact was fantastic, quite video gamey in style, with the misfits suddenly being plunged into darkness and suspended in the air while lightning flickered around them.

And Nathan doesn't want just any lame old super power. No, he wants "one from the A -list", but we don't know exactly what he's hoping for. As he's clearly the star of the show, he'll have to get something far superior to the ability to read minds, as bestowed on Kelly, or Alisha's power to incite sexual hunger in any male, or Curtis' time-bending skills, or poor old ‘weird' Simon who can suddenly become invisible. What on earth is left? He tried flying, but that's not it.

The performances are confident and very funny, and the ensemble gels well. Lauren Socha as defensive, downtrodden Kelly has possibly the most desolate face on television, all pale skin and black eyeliner and scraped back greasy hair. I hope I'm not giving the script too much credit in saying that it is so witty and self-aware that Kelly surely won't have a too obvious bad-girl-turned-good-girl story, but reading minds will surely serve her well, even if she's too freaked out to see the positive at the moment.

Visually it's a treat, too. The orange ‘community payback' jumpsuits are startling against the stormy, grey-blue skies and brick buildings that form the community centre setting, and the jagged camera work keeps it feeling anxious and twitchy, suitable for the shared mood of the misfits.

And the murderous probation worker was a turn up for the books! While the kids gained superpowers, the probation officer turned into an axe-brandishing vampiric assailant whom the misfits ended up seeing off and burying, along with one of their other community service fellows who got killed along the way. "Uhh, I'm pretty sure this breaches the terms of my ASBO," said Nathan at point of burial, another classic line. His comedy is quite physical but also very arch, verging on camp. Sort of Graham Norton meets Ben Stiller. He really is quite the little scene-stealer, and is currently overshadowing more subtle performances, particularly that of Nathan Stewart Jarrett playing tormented athlete Curtis.

All in all, a compelling opening to a new series: a thoroughly enjoyable concept, very well done, and in the safe hands of a capable cast. It taps into the modern perception of ‘today's yoof' as self-obsessed, anti-social illiterates and pokes fun at that perception without it feeling like its making a heavy-handed sociological point. It's just fairly hilarious and good old-fashioned entertainment, with cracking dialogue and characters we're definitely laughing with, not at.

Misfits airs in the UK on Thursdays at 10pm on E4 and 11pm on E4+1, with repeat showings the following Wednesday at 11 and 12pm.

I enjoyed this first episode of the series more than the entire run of series three of HEROES.

Agreed! I had high hopes for this and they weren't dashed against a rock and pummeled to pieces. :cD I'll be tuning in next week, for sure.

Superbly cast, brilliant drama. What a cracking opener! The only downside is that Misfits highlights just how wasted British talent is. There are precious few homegrown dramas as it is - and even fewer high-concept, Sci-Fi shows. Misfits is far superior to any number of massive budget American series. Channel 4 and the BBC should be ploughing more of that import buying money into making stuff like this. Smart, funny, brutal and British.

Pleasantly surprised by this show. An interesting cast and well paced. I'm actually looking forward to watching what happens next week!

I'll give any new series a chance: i did with Skins (lastest 2 episodes, 1st series)hated it; fell in love with The Inbetweeners, brilliant! Totally avoiding any vampire related ones (Trublood? more like Toobad). And after losing interest in Lost, losing the plot with Heroes and not much else on asides from repeats (Two and Half Men and My Wife and Kids) I am so glad that E4 and Overman have come up with Misfits. British drama has a realness about it that you can relate to rather than shiny, glossy American drama. I'm in my 30's and will oh so look forward to Thursday nights!

As a first episode it has to rate as one of the best ever. The concept is simple and the characters well defined. The story potential has yet to be established but the writing is very sharp and so will no doubt have people coming back for the characters alone. There is a vibrant energy infused into the acting that makes the most of the great lines delivered and it makes the whole thing feel very exciting. Even the plots get silly you can imagine them just being something for the characters and the humour to riff on. The misfits are welcome on my TV anytime!

The first episode was fantastic. I can not wait to see the next. It starts with genetic charactor types as you need to get a lot of info to your veiwers in a short space of time. As the series goes on I hope it will make you question your first asumptions of the charactors. UK TV just gets it, a low FX budget can be a good thing in the hands of a good script writer(s). Its all about the dialog and interaction between the chatactors, not the FX effects which US shows seem to rely upon. Its too early to comapre this to US series Heros. (A series I first enjoyed, then became bored with.) The clever thing is anything can happen. You don't know whats going to happen to who or why. How many times can that be said to US shows?

The reason I obsessively check DoG every morning is for gems like Misfits. After reading the first paragraph of your review I knew I needed to see this show. What started as a modern "Breakfast Club" quickly exploded into a far more interesting reworking of Buffy's central "adolescence is hell" metaphor. And you are all correct, nothing we produce in the U.S. comes anywhere close to the wit, charm or (I suspect) realism of Misfits. In the U.S., we smooth out all the rough edges and generally pander to the lowest common denominator. I can't think of a recent U.S. show that was this compelling from the very first episode. We would never have characters that talk like the Misfits or feel as real as these characters do. It's a gem of a show and I'm hooked. Thank you. (Can anyone tell me where Kelly's accent is from?)

I did enjoy the show more than I thought I might and it's definitely more intelligent and sophisticated than American shows such as Heroes and Fast Forward. It had plenty of clever humour which blends well with the sinister overtones. Problem was, Nathan, great looks acerbic wit and all, is infuriating and Alisha is a walking stereotype of beautiful, buxom brown women, 2Dimensional and obnoxious. I so wanted her role to be something more substantial than the oversexed 'ethnic' chick; the actress Antonia Thomas is the sister of a former school friend and I was wishing her well. Her supposed 'power' as Antonia put it is more of a curse than an asset and is just plain stupid. Oh and it's just lazy now to always depict teenagers as prurient sex crazed egits. It's put me in two minds about continuing to watch it. BTW I disagree Nathan eclipses the other male roles. You need the other men to be the straight guys and to be honest it's not easy to carry off subtle so Nathan Stewart-Jarratt and the other actor are doing well. That said it is well written in parts so who knows? Will give it the benefit of the doubt.

@ dergolem, Kelly doesn't so much have a regional accent as a class one... She is pure Chav and in my experience they tend to sound pretty similar regardless of where they come from.

@ Blestlyric - I hope you have continued to watch as in episode 2 Nathan steps beyond his stereotype and is brilliantly portrayed as a real person with real emotional depth; and in episode 3 Alisha starts to realise what a curse her power really is and again with great acting from her and good acting from Curtis both characters grow in depth.

@dergolem - Kelly has a very strong East Midlands accent. The actress is from Nottingham, and this is pretty much how she talks IRL. Awesome review by the way, this is the best show to come along all year and it deserves all the success its getting.
