6. Scary Monsters And Super Creeps
I sense from the talkback on the last review that people don't like me pointing out how shoddy this show can be. So, ahead of seeing this episode I decided this week to try to concentrate on the positive aspects of Scary Monsters And Super Creeps.
Having now seen it, I've realised that these reviews need to be at least 500 words, generally, which is, frankly, something of a stretch on the encouraging aspects of this material. But I'll try.
What did I like? Well, there's a subplot where Demitri Noh and Al Gough follow some blue hand clues to the people who attacked them, admitting along the way that he's now entirely bought into the flash concept, something he's been resisting so far for obvious reasons. I wasn't entirely convinced by the join-the-dots detective work, but at least it made more sense than most of their attempts at investigation so far.
There was also an uncomfortable clash of agendas when Lloyd's son turns up at the Benford household telling everyone that "It's my house too!" Lloyd follows him there and a difficult moment ensues when Olivia, Mark and Lloyd all manage to arrive on same page for once.
If you're wondering about the David Bowie referenced title, this is a Halloween special of sorts, as the ritual of Trick or Treat plays a part in the story.
Oops, I've run out of good things to say. Did I mention how amazing the Halloween costumes were? No, they're really something, to the point that I'm amazed how professional people can be to get some free candy. Congratulations must go to costume department for Aaron's ‘Obi-wan' attire, where they'd clearly been told to create the costume of a Star Wars obsessive. It's so accurate to the movie version that they even got one of those really expensive lightsaber replicas for him, making Aaron the token geek in this week's show.
What didn't I care for? Plenty, but mostly that the progress of the larger story arc is now moving at the sort of speed that makes petrification seem rushed. It's like the writers are assuming that this will run for at least five seasons before any serious plot headway is made. I can tell them now it won't, so get a move on!
In an attempt to redeem itself they throw in a major plot point in the last thirty seconds, which would have been a shock had I, along with most of the people following this show, not already seen this scene in the promo sequence at the end the pilot episode.
I could make acerbic comments about the god-awful scenes on the train involving the mercurial Simon, but I've not any idea where even to begin with them and the abysmal dialogue contained within them.
The overnight numbers indicate I'm not the only viewer who feels this way, as this episode hit a new season low.
Before you all vent your spleens about how I'm not cutting this show any slack, consider this: if I'm wrong about this show my penance will be writing about it for some months yet, as painful as I'm currently finding it.

I agree that the writing is god-awful on occasions. I'm still giving it the benefit of the doubt though as the network seem to have realised that it needs better talent and have sacked the show runner. Let's hope David Goyer can improve matters.

A show with such great promise has got worse ep by ep by ep, very dissapointed :(. Flash Forward should learn from other shows, if you're going to focus on a few charchters that are already connected, scale it down, Jericho was in a town and despite some flaws overall enjoyable, Lost on an island amazing, and if their going to go "World Wide" with it, have a group of charchters that are world wide and slowly their stories begin to connect/ come together for an exciting climax, something Heroes nearly pulled off perfectly along time ago. Flash Forward needs major work, I don't know why but I'm keeping the faith but if things don't change soon "I'm Out" because this show seems to love dishing out dissapointment. Oh one more suggestion make each ep 2 minutes long, because thats the bit thats only ever any good lol. As for this weeks ep apart from seeing more of Charlie, not much happened *yawn*

Well, I gave up 2 weeks ago. Don't like being called stupid by the producers of the TV I watch, but Flash Forward does exactly that. Been reading the reviews to see if there's any improvement to the point where I may start watching again, but it seems it's got worse - that's an achievement.

For me the disappointment from this episode is the realization that the entire show is basically solving a man made crime. We will have a moment when Mark suspects Lloyd, talks with Olivia, no one believes him yada yada yada. Such a great start and premise. Who did it, why, aliens, earth stuff..should have kept us wondering more into the season.
What happened to Mark and Olivia both working together not to let the future happen? Beginning of episode ' live each moment in the present'...End of episode 'Screw it, we are separated, future will happen'.
PS...chase scenes are not exciting just waiting for Mark to catch em already. I think this is the third or fourth time they did that.
Oh - and 20 million people die, who cares, regular news, trick or treating 3weeks later, no discussion on whether it will happen again...I would probably put my kids in football helmets all day and definitely not fly until they figured it out.

The biggest problem with this show is that they manage to stretch 10 minutes of plot development over the course of 50 minutes due to... well a whole load of nothing. I feel like the main plot is about the relationship between Mark and Olivia and that the blackout is a side issue. YAWN.
And is it just me or does anyone else think Dimitri is the biggest cock on TV?

I stuck up for this last week, as the shootout set to amazingly inappropriate music was fun in a kind of weird way. This one though was back to business as glum usual. The characters are weak, very little happens in terms of story development, and there's some very weird plot contrivances. Like why did the babysitter come round to hand out sweets to stangers when the family was out trick or treating? How come the 'nice' gangbanger paid for the kid's bus ticket? And why does Mark FBI Agent look constipated all the time? Oh, and schroedingers cat should not be allowed on sci-fi shows anymore, its almost becoming a cliche.

Did people miss the pregnancy thing? Apparently the bullet 'bounced around' inside Janice and now she can't have a baby. Did I misunderstand something, because that seems to me like a big development. Plus the schroedingers cat explanation seems to point to whether the mystery is, having observed 'A' future will that now make it happen? Is the blue hand group some kind of cult? the preview didn't seem to portray them as some kind Gang. Are they trying to change the future they've seen? Hence the attack on the MOsaic team? I thought were a lot of plot points brought forward in this epeisode that might have been noticed if you weren't obsessing over the production. Yes, the Characters need some work and they are it's biggest failing but maybe we'll get a mid-season shake up with characters dying and new ones brought in.

Thank you Omniaural, there was me thinking I was the only one who doesn't hate this show with an almighty vengeance. It seems you lot above want a different show because, apart from a few quibbles mentioned last week (yes Mark is a cock, yes like Lost people don't have "real" conversations) but overall it just isn't THAT bad. Its enjoyable for an hour that I'd otherwise spend watching some other shit on TV. Put this into perspective- is it The Wire good? No, its not trying to be. Is it Heroes season 3 bad? Absolutely not! These reviews remind me of DOG's Dollhouse season 1 reviews, which were just determined to kill the show before it began. VERY few shows hit the ground running but its like the writers on this site don't appreciate that any more, its got to be Emmy-worthy from episode 1. That is so rare in TV. I think you lot need to get some perspective back and realise the show will develop as the season goes on. If it doesn't fine, you were right- but I just don't see how you can write an entire idea off after only 6 episodes.

Hi Omniaural, I've actually been hoping that something, ANYTHING, goes against the determinist concept that the show has, but unfortunately I don't think Janice's pregnancy qualifies... I actually groaned when she said that it would now be 'virtually' impossible to have a baby, as that to me just gives her a good reason to be crying in her flash forward when she discovers the sex of the baby, and shows yet again that they're all apparently powerless to change their fates....
Also, the conversation between Mark and Olivia at the end (I also don't understand why they concentrate so much on marital issues on the show when surely the blackout would be more interesting) really frustrated me... they know that Olivia appears to be sleeping with the other guy in six months, but Mark tells her that he will be drinking in the future, and THAT'S the bigger problem?? Also, he's an FBI agent, and shouldn't be rattled that easily by his wife.... Anyway, I'll give it a few more weeks; not out of the hope of it improving, but just because I struggle to leave a tv show halfway through!
