Dollhouse season 2 episode 4 review

Billy wonders why it’s taken so long for Dollhouse to show its true potential.

2.4 Belonging

Without doubt, Belonging is the strongest Dollhouse story so far, which has only fuelled my frustration with this show even more. For a brief eclipse of time the bright glare of silly ideas and digital hookers gives way to some brilliant performances and clinical story telling.

Director on point for this was no less that Trek alumni Jonathan Frakes, who makes a First Contact effort here and not a Thunderbirds debacle. The quality of his work stands out a mile, and they'd be smart to get him to direct some more if he's available.

The plot represents a complete back-story for Sierra, how she ended up in the Dollhouse, and why she probably shouldn't be there. I'm not going to dissect it here, because it's so good that it deserves watching un-fettered by my frame-by-frame analysis.

What I will say is that I'm now caught between two entirely different emotions: the joy of this episode and the depression of what I've had to endure to get here.

The most positive aspect is that it shows just how good a cast Dollhouse has, when presented with some decent material to work with. Everybody ups their game, and even Eliza Dushku comes over much better than usual. For the second time in this season I find myself complimenting Fran Kranz for adding some real depth to Topher Brink, and Dichen Lachman carries the majority of screen time effortlessly as Sierra.

Overall, it's a show transformation that makes the personality alterations of the show seem mild in comparison.

What I also liked was it defined a new and interesting direction for the show to take, the idea that maybe this Dollhouse might go ‘rogue' and how the Rossum Corporation might react to that scenario.

Echo warns Boyd Langton that a ‘storm is coming'. Is that wind blowing from Rossum that's coming this way? Next week's story involves the determined Senator Daniel Perrin, so maybe not.

If you never watch an episode of Dollhouse ever again, I'd watch this so that you can at least experience how it could have been, with all the dross removed.

So what are you waiting for? Go watch this as it really is entertaining! Though, I'd make no assumptions that the next one will be remotely as good.

I think... I hope, rather, that this is the turning point. Just like last seasons 6th episode in, It started getting better, and apart from one slip up, the series got so much better that the last two episodes of the season were incredibly good. Don't get me started on the bloody brilliant epitaph one, it's too good for words! But so far this season it's seemed like run of the mill stories each week. I just hope that enough people stuck with it for this episode, and that the quality will continue to improve.

I too liked the epi and sensed a stronger director's touch to it. I've always liked Dichen Lachman and she certainly can show more range than Eliza! Was the dress Echo was wearing in the first scene painted on?

I also loved this ep. I thought everyone upped their game for it (although Enver Gjokaj didn't really need to, he's been so great) and everything in it shone. Dichen hasn't had a huge amount of character to play until now, so it was great to finally see her get a chance to be something other than a sidekick or backup. And I think Fran Kranz is going to just get better. One small point though. I don't think there's another ep until December 4th now - Fox seem to have pulled it from the schedule for the November sweeps in the states. I don't know if SciFi UK are planning to air before Fox US, but if not, the next ep is Dec 4th when they're doing 2 hours back to back.

Superb episode, and true to form Fox is nailing the coffin shut! Personally I have really enjoyed this season, it has really shown what Joss wanted to the show to be and makes me hate FOX even more (if that is possible) for the cluster frak they made of the 1st season. Ok not all of this series has been up to this standard but it has been consistently watchable.

Thanks Cordas, I was beginning to think I was the only one who didn't actively dislike the first half of S1 - there were a few duds, but I still enjoyed it. And I quite agree with the sentiments about the first season. If Fox had just allowed Joss to do his thing, instead of deciding that people really just want T&A and SotW eps, I reckon it would have gained more of an audience because there wouldn't have had to be 5 eps that essentially tell us the same thing! On a final note, if Fox do kill it, I am definitely getting this: http://store.hijinksensue.com/product/lolfox-t-shirt

finally we get an episode that delivered the potential that was crying to get out from the mediocre engagement of the week stuff. Best episode of s2 by a country mile and hopefully we can now start to get to the good stuff as promised by the 2nd half of the 1st season and epitaph 1. I'm just now hoping that fox don't bottle it before dec and we don't get see if this is the new standard of episode.

A quality episode at last! If only they could keep up this kind of pace and depth, maybe the show could be saved.

Everything in the review rings true - but especially the "Though, I'd make no assumptions that the next one will be remotely as good." comment. It was good to see the rebellious streak in Boyd which seemed to disintegrate last season and less of the poorly acted and dubiously motivated FBI agent is a (very very) big plus - he's rubbish and can't act. Should be on daytime TV!
