Dollhouse: are its days now numbered?

Simon Brew

Fox takes Dollhouse off the air during November, and there’s now a strong feeling that its chances of a third season are very, very slim…

Published on Oct 23, 2009

The bumpy journey of Joss Whedon's Dollhouse, which has continued to struggle in the ratings in the early stages of its second season, could finally be coming to an end. It's now being reported over at The Ausiello Files that Dollhouse is going to be taken off the air by Fox across the crucial November sweeps season in the US, and isn't likely to return to our screens until December. And that is foreboding news for the show.

Season two hasn't been a disaster in terms of ratings to fair. Thanks to the show's DVR audience, it's been adding around 50% to its numbers when taking into account those who record it on a Friday night in the US and that catch up with it later. But the fact remains that Dollhouse is still struggling, and - in spite of some promising signs in season two - it's still not found the consistency and confidence of some of Whedon's other TV hits.

By taking the show off the air at such a pivotal time, Fox has pretty much canned any hope of further episodes being added to Dollhouse's current run (which stands at 13 for season two). Furthermore, while it's committed to showing the rest of the season, the future prognosis for Dollhouse is now really very weak. The general consensus is that if it gets a third season commission, it's going to need something of a miracle in the ratings to make that happen.

The only slight upside is that Joss Whedon has promised that the show, one way or another, will get a proper ending. It's just it now seems that the proper ending is coming a lot sooner than most of us would have liked.

According to an interview I heard with Mr. Whedon, Fox never really allowed him to make the show he had originally signed on to make. After all the papers were signed the execs asked for the concept to be toned down and basically took out the heart of what he wanted to do. After that, they have had a hard time finding a new direction. This show should never have been made on Fox, it should have gone to at least TNT or to HBO or Showtime. Then it would have been allowed to be what it was supposed to be, and probably would have been a much better show.

DVR numbers dont really matter its about the amount of Live viewers that really matters and the show doesn have enough live viewers to keep it going. The show will be no lose it was a complete and utter disaster.

another all time low in last nights live viewing figures. 2.1 million. I wouldn't be surprised if it never returned in december.

I really enjoyed the last episode. The less I see of Echo the better I like it. The supporting cast in this case is really supporting the show. I'd love to see a spinoff (or maybe season 3?), minus Echo, perhaps dealing with the post-apocolyptic world shown in Epitaph. That would be fantastic - they could do a few flashbacks to the present day Dollhouse crew. Ooooh!

1.) Fox should not expect a show that appeals to the 18-35 demographic to get stellar ratings on a Friday night. 2.) In the age of streaming video and the ability to watch full episodes anytime being offered on network websites and other sites like hulu; the allure of being strapped to our TV on THEIR schedule appeals less and less. The networks need to catch up as this applies to other shows such as Heroes as well.
