The Top 20 Kids TV Theme Tunes: The Winner Revealed

Michael Bush

It is the 16th century. From all over the world, great ships sail west to hear the finest kids' TV theme tune of all time. And you'll find the full lyrics to it here too. Prepare to get goosebumps, people...

Published on Jul 18, 2007

In your heart of hearts, you know it too. There could only, surely, be one winner here. So join as Den Of Geek celebrates the majesty of...

Mysterious Cities of Gold

As Michael Bush succinctly puts it: "Never mind favourite children's television theme tunes; the Mysterious Cities of Gold intro is a strong contender for my favourite piece of music - nay, favourite thing - ever. Someone seriously needs to sample the shit out of that 'woah' bit that leads into the chorus. Sublime. Tops programme, too".

To complete the celebration, we've dug out the lyrics. Clear your throats boys and girls: it's time for a Den Of Geek sing-song...

VOICEOVER BIT

It is the 16th century.

From all over Europe great ships sale west to conquer the New World, the Americas. These men eager to seek their fortune, to find new adventures in new lands. They long to cross uncharted seas and discover unknown countries. To find secret gold on a mountain trail high in the Andes.

They dream of following the path of the setting sun that leads to Eldorado, and the Mysterious Cities Of Gold.

YOU CAN START SINGING NOW

Children of the sun see your time has just begun
Searching for your ways
Through adventures everyday

Every day and night, with the Condor in flight
With all your friends in tow
We search for the Cities Of Gold

Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah
Wishing for the Cities of Gold
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah
Someday we will find, the Cities of Gold

Doo doo doo do
Ah-ah-ah
Doo doo doo do
Cities of Gold
Doo doo doo do
Ah-ah-ah
Doo doo doo do
Cities of Gold

Children of the Sun
Someday soon you're gonna find
That your destiny holds the secret, holds the key

Ahhhhhhhhhh-ah-ah-ah-ah
Someday we will find
The Cities of Gooooooooooooooold

It makes us cry with joy just to read the words

Here's Willy Fogg - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nqN_7eGItM Definitely a James Mason thing going on there. I suppose the singer couldn't quite manage David Niven.

Am I the only person alive in the 80s who thought "Cities of Gold" sucked?

There is an uproar in the office! Someone is disgusted that Dogtanian, Roobarb and Custard, Pigeon Street, Dungeons and Dragons, Flumps, Jamie and the Magic Torch, and numerous others aren't in there :(

Willy Fogg there's a case for, possibly Dogtanian. But Dungeons & Dragons? The Flumps? Come on! Get a grip!

But the theme tune? By all means love the show, but the music wasn't much to crow about?

Re: The Top 20 Kids TV Theme Tunes: The Winner Revealed

Really? We're going along and just pretending that the theme song to Ducktales never happened, then? Or Darkwing Duck? Is this some kind of specific slight against animated ducks in general? Because those shows had great theme songs. Accurate, too, because life WAS like a hurricane in Duckberg, and when there was trouble you DID call D.W. I suppose it would be silly to mention the Ninja Turtles theme song, too.

Other classics that didn't make the grade... Bucky O Hare, Knightmare, Galaxy High, Thundercats, Transformers, Justice League of America, Godzilla, Monkey..... wow so many musical memories

Knightmare? Come on! Focus! Focus! Great show, crap tune! Er, no comment on the ducks...

The greatest theme tune ever is Educating Marmalade. Simple... That Willy Fog's theme is not in here is criminal; way better than Cities Of Gold. Way, way better.

Oh God, that show. Love the song, hate the actual cartoon.

If I remember right cities of gold, Dogtanion ( see what they did there, its d'artanion and he is a dog...clever stuff), Willy Fogg ( see they did it again.. its really Phillias Fogg but this time he is a Will....nope he was a lion wasnt he) Belle and Sebastian, Ullysese and a bastardized moomins ( not nearly as creepy as the original) and other cartoons of that ilk were all sort of cheaply animated semi manga things which were comissioned by France or some other european country i to be knocked out and bunged up on telly to entertain kids in the 1980s. Childrens BBC must have got a job lot of them for the likes of Phillp Schofield, Andy Crane and Andy Peters to introduce from the Broom cupboard... It was all so much better than Childrens ITV which had... erm Gaz Top and ... blimey they were so bland I have forgotten

actually I think the Dangermouse theme 'poons Cities of Gold

No comment on the ducks, eh? Yeah, I'm pretty sure there's some kind of conspiracy going on here. And it goes all the way to the top, right to the Whitehouse. If there was a place for Raggy Dolls it doesn't seem unreasonable that Sharky And George get a mention, either.

NO NO NO, Simon: You're not often wrong, but you're wrong. The roustabout March-a-long theme of Willy Fog beats the psuedo-ethnic panpipe nonsense of Cities Of Gold every time... where's your self respect man?

Re: The Top 20 Kids TV Theme Tunes: The Winner Revealed

Cities Of Gold *kills* Willy Fogg. I love Willy Fogg, but please, open your ears!

Re: The Top 20 Kids TV Theme Tunes: The Winner Revealed
Posted By Robmac 1 July 18, 2007 03:09:18 PM

has anyone actually got Cities of Gold on dvd? - is it still worth a watch or best left like so many shows to rose-tinted nostalgia? (its true...Transformers for example. I watched an episode the other day... what tosh and I used to think it was great.. same goes for Hong Kong Fooey too..utter rubbish)

I'm afraid I must lay my trump card here. Being a complete child of the eighties (ok I missed three years), the only thing better than Cities of Gold - apart from Willy Fogg AND Raggy Dolls - is the all time big-hitter and undeniable champion... Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1c1G24GWDg 'Lightning Strikes!!'

"NO NO NO, Simon: You're not often wrong, but you're wrong. The roustabout March-a-long theme of Willy Fog beats the psuedo-ethnic panpipe nonsense of Cities Of Gold every time... where's your self respect man?" John, have you been on the pipe?

This is a great talk-back.. my suggestion would be to to another one about the best 1980s films... my vote 'The Touch' from Transformers the movie. Also Jayce and the Wheeled was great -- the Monster Minds and Sorbos were cool. Also where on the list is Jamie And His Magic Torch, Terrahawks and Star Fleet?

Simple: they're not on the list. The list stands. It is gospel. ;-)

There seems to be a touch of confusion between the phrases Top 20 Kid's TV Theme Tunes, and Top 20 Kid's TV Shows. 'Oh look, a Dungeons and Dragon ride' hardly suffices as the greatest of 'lyrics'. Either way, Cities of Gold sucked the proverbial. And why didn't Tiswas get on the list?

The top 50 ever kids TV shows... could take a while, but we all know the winners will be Jimbo and the Jetset at number five, Portland Bill at number four, count Duckula at number three, Dangermouse at number two and Bananaman at number one!

I own every episode in english after many years trying to source them. It is even better to watch than I remember as a child. Cartoons these days are not the same calibre as they were then. Have also created a fan group for them so please check it out here http://bebo.com/mysteriouscitiesgold
