Doctor Who series five spoiler

Simon Brew

Amidst the many new Doctor Who series 5 photos suddenly doing the rounds lies a familiar face...

Published on Jul 20, 2009

If you like your Doctor Who served cold, don't read any further. We'll even put some carriage returns in to help you make up your mind...

Still here? Then click on over to this photo gallery from The Sun (link at the bottom of the page, it might do some funny resizing things with your browser, and as the gallery keeps updating, you might need to scroll through a picture or two to get to the one we're talking about. Other than that, it all works fine)

Recognise the woman standing in the picture? That's none other than Alex Kingston, who we last saw in the Doctor Who two parter Silence In The Library and Forest Of The Dead. She was playing River Song, who may or may not have been the Doctor's wife. At the very least, she knew an awful lot about him.

The two episodes the character appeared in were both written by Steven Moffat, who of course is now in charge of the show (so to speak). It's thus unsurprising, although very intriguing, that he'd choose to bring her back. The sod is that we have to wait until next Spring to find out more.

Bah.

Is it just me or do those photos look a bit fake? Especially the ones with the TARDIS, and especially picture 4

The Tardis looks ridiculously cartoon-ish... and he looks like such an idiot it's unbelievable... she looks fine though ;) roll on the 12th Doctor hahahaha

That outfit is a bit... naff. Is there any chance he'll change it a few episodes in?

This TARDIS has actually been redesigned to look like William Hartnell's original. The white circle on the right hand door, the white window trims and different coloured glass. It's not cartoonish at all. It's the original!

Correct! it is the original Tardis - that is 100 how police box's used to look. I think the outfit look ok too, kind of "cosmic hobo" reminiscent of Troughton... I think Dr Who is in very good hands with Steven Moffat

Hmm...I love that the st John's ambulence sticker is back...it got lost after season 2 of William Hartnell. But I'm not so sure about the bright blue colour...it's a bit strong. The white windows are noce to see back again, except the bars need to be thicker. It also doesn't look quite so mysterious as Mr Tennent's Tardis. I suppose that this means that there's be a new interior too.

What ever happened to the doctor's grand daughter from the very first doctor? Shouldn't she be a time lord as well? Did she regenerate like he does or did she die in the time war?

Now will River Song's journal that was left lying at the end of Forest of the Dead come into play? Will someone manipulate the Doctor's future...?

Original Tardis

I'm not a hardcore Whovian (i watch it when it's on), so i'm observing these photos as a bit of an outsider. I think the Doctor's new look is great. Even the turn-ups work (bit like Tennant's triners). Original Tardis though? Not sure. Hopefully there's an in-story chameleon circuit based explanation as to why it looks different. I think it's too colourful and cartoony, but mostly it looks too damn big. It's HUUUGE to the point of looking daft! The windows are too high to look out of!

Lovin' the leather elbow patches...

This might not be a redesign just for the sake of a new look. I'm wondering if the redesigned exterior of the TARDIS has anything to do with the New Years Day Regeneration episode and the suspected identity of it's guest stars. Could this possibly be a sign that the time lock has been broken permanently?

I, for one, could not be more thrilled. This looks like a return to the Golden Age. Don't get me wrong, I couldn't love the 10th Doctor ANY more. He's just wonderful and I enjoyed every episode. But that just make the jump to the 11th that much harder -- and this looks perfect. I love that it looks true to the old series. This looks amazing.
