Doctor Who: Tom Baker to return?
Simon Brew
Could the most famous Doctor of all be heading back to the Tardis?
Gawd bless the 2010 Doctor Who rumour mill. We’ve already had Albert Finney and Patrick Stewart heavily-linked, although neither has been confirmed. But what about the possible return to Doctor Who of Mr Tom Baker?
According to a story over at Sky, which all seems a bit tenuous to us, Baker could be set to make an appearance in season five of the show, which starts filming next year for broadcast in 2010. It cites a story in The Sun – that seems to have been pulled from its website – which in turn relays the words of a Doctor Who insider posting online. It’s all a bit friend-of-a-friend for us, and perhaps there’s a bit of wishful thinking in there. Steven Moffat, however, wouldn’t be drawn on the idea of a Baker cameo when interviewed earlier this year.
There’s also the consideration that, fanboy joy aside, Baker was such a dominant figure in Doctor Who, that his is the kind of reappearance that would have to be very, very carefully managed. Still, we wait to see how this one develops…!

Re: Doctor Who: Tom Baker to return?Would kind of so love this too be true if it just wasn't for the fact that Tom just isn't the man he once was & I don't want a 4th Dr story any other way than how the 4th Dr always looked.
Unfortunately the only way to bring back the 4th Dr would be old footage inserted & maybe Tom can dub lines according to the script.
Re: Doctor Who: Tom Baker to return? There's an ageing Tennant clone in the Whoverse now - why could Tom not have one too?
Re: Doctor Who: Tom Baker to return?Let's face it, the guy isn't the Byronic beanpole he once was. Can't see how they could do it and not have it look a bit sh*t.
Re: Doctor Who: Tom Baker to return? If you read the Sky News report more carefully, it mentions that Series 5 may feature a story involving the Doctor meeting Winston Churchill. Tom Baker now resembles old Winston more than his Doctor - and Tom today is no doubt as equally crusty and bombastic as Winston was during wartime. Therefore, I'd be putting my money on Tom playing WC, not just rehashing the fourth Doctor! I think casting TB in a different role would be great - and really challenge his range as an actor (let's be honest, in his last couple of years as the Doctor, even TB found the role tedious! I think he'd find playing WC a hoot and much more interesting!). Plus, the Cardiff production team would still have a great selling point for the series - Tom Baker is back in Doctor Who nearly 30 years after he left it - but not as the Doctor! Anyway, if there's a strong case for bringing back a former Doctor as the Doctor, I'd rather see Paul McGann make an appearance as the Eighth Doctor in flashback, as the Sun was mooting recently, but which the BBC denied! |
