Superman: set for another reboot?
Simon Brew
Is Mark Millar about to breathe fresh big screen life into the Man of Steel?
By now, we would have expected the follow-up to Superman Returns to have moved into production. Yet with rumour upon rumour about whether Bryan Singer will be involved or not (and last we heard on it, he was), another face has moved onto the scene that could change the direction of the franchise once more. For right now, it looks like it’s a good time to be Mark Millar. The acclaimed comic-book writer, who has seen the Wanted movie rake up over $50m in one weekend over in the States (and garner impressive reviews too) has said before that he has a long-cherished dream of doing a modern Superman movie. And with Warner Bros and Bryan Singer seemingly still not close to putting anything onto the screen, he may yet get his chance.
Millar has been quoted as saying that he’s got a producer and director in place for his own take on Superman, and that it could be on our screens for 2011 (which, if the Batman series continues on its three-yearly cycle, could make for an interesting three-way showdown between Superman, the Bat and Spider-man). On his own message boards, in response to the reaction to the news, he talks about how “a very well known” American action director got in touch with him to team up for a pitch at Superman. Millar reckons he’ll find out if he’s got the job this side of Christmas.
With the Justice League movie canned, and Superman Returns 2 stuck in development hell for far longer than expected, this could be the catalyst, one way or another, to get the Man Of Steel back on the big screen sooner rather than later. Here’s hoping…
