Huge HD DVD news: Paramount abandon Blu-ray for HD DVD

Simon Brew

The hi-def format war has taken a dramatic and hugely unexpected swing with Paramount out of nowhere going HD DVD exclusive. Is this a blow Blu-ray can recover from?

As one of the few in this country actively supporting high-definition formats, I've ended up with technology that supports both HD DVD and Blu-ray. I've thus completely hedged my bets, but for the last few months I've been inclined - against my preference - to nudge the battle in Sony's favour. In short, HD DVD was slipping, and Blu-ray winning.

But a huge announcement today has turned things completely on their head. Paramount and its subsidiaries, previously supporting both Blu-ray and HD DVD, have gone HD DVD exclusive. Considering a month ago the only major studio exclusively supporting the format was Universal, HD DVD was looking on its last legs.

Yet this turns things enormously. All of a sudden, titles exclusive to HD DVD this Christmas are Shrek 3, Transformers, Knocked Up and Bourne Ultimatum. Exclusive to Blu-ray are Spider-man 3, Simpsons, Pirates 3, Die Hard 4 and Fantastic Four 2. The likes of Harry Potter and Ocean's 13 are coming out on both.

This doesn't, of course, help the consumer who has been befuddled by the format war in the first place, but it's the format equivalent of banging in an equaliser with seconds on the clock and taking the battle to extra time. All of a sudden, the HD battle is ultra-tight, and far too close to call...

Update: Steven Spielberg movies are exempt from the deal, which covers the likes of Indiana Jones, War of the Worlds and Minority Report...

Here's the full, unedited press release:

Los Angeles, CA, August 20, 2007 – Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc. (NYSE: VIA and VIA.B) and DreamWorks Animation SKG (NYSE:DWA), each announced today that they will exclusively support the next-generation HD DVD format on a worldwide basis.  The exclusive HD DVD commitment will include all movies distributed by Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures, Paramount Vantage, Nickelodeon Movies and MTV Films, as well as movies from DreamWorks Animation, which are distributed exclusively by Paramount Home Entertainment.

The companies each said that the decision to distribute exclusively in the HD DVD format resulted from an extensive evaluation of current market offerings, which confirmed the clear benefits of HD DVD, particularly its market-ready technology and lower manufacturing costs. Paramount Home Entertainment will launch its exclusive HD DVD program with the release of the blockbuster comedy hit “Blades of Glory” on August 28th and follow with two of the biggest grossing movies of the year “Transformers” and “Shrek the Third”.  These three titles alone represent more than $1.5 billion in box office ticket sales worldwide.

“The combination of Paramount and DreamWorks Animation brings a critical mass of current box office hits to consumers with a line-up of live action and animated films that are perfect for HD DVD,” stated Brad Grey, Chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures, which is currently the leading studio in domestic box office.  “Part of our vision is to aggressively extend our movies beyond the theater, and deliver the quality and features that appeal to our audience.  I believe HD DVD is not only the affordable high quality choice for consumers, but also the smart choice for Paramount.”

“We decided to release “Shrek the Third” and other DreamWorks Animation titles exclusively on HD DVD because we believe it is the best format to bring high quality home entertainment to a key segment of our audience – families,” stated DreamWorks Animation CEO, Jeffrey Katzenberg.  “We believe the combination of this year’s low- priced HD DVD players and the commitment to release a significant number of hit titles in the fall makes HD DVD the best way to view movies at home.”

With the rapid increase of HD TV screens in households, and audiences wanting to enjoy the total entertainment experience, HD DVD has emerged as the most affordable way for consumers to watch their movies in high definition.  In addition to pristine quality, HD DVD also offers consumers the chance to personalize the movie-watching experience, to interact with their movies and even to connect with a community of other fans.

Paramount Home Entertainment will issue new releases day and date as well as catalog titles exclusively on HD DVD.  Today’s announcement does not include films directed by Steven Spielberg as his films are not exclusive to either format.

This is quite a big issue and complicates the entire HD Vs Blu-Ray question even more and in my opinion will keep people off buying either. It seems that at the moment people are reluctant to get either format for a number of reasons. The first of these is that most people presently are happy with dvd. We have only had this technology around for just under a decade and by now people have moved completely away from video, replacing loved films and tv shows they had either bought on video or recorded of TV and purchased the dvd version and are now content with this. Video was around for the best part of twenty years, dvd for ten and i think a lot of buyers are going to be reluctant to spend out again for films that have bought 'recently' on another format. I see dvd being around as the dominant format for the next five years at least. The second reason of course is the hardware, again people are happy with the players they have and the current price of hd/blu ray players are at the top end of the market - why pay 200-300 pound for a player when you can get another dvd player for your spare room for under 30 quid? Finally all this inter-company format bickering is confusing people and stopping them making a decision, who wants to spend a lot of money on a 'dead-format' player that will be nothing more than a fancy door stop if that format looses. Because we have heard so much negativity, rowing and changes of opinion in the press about the format wars all consumers really hear is the negatives and non of the positives that either format offer - negative press puts people off and with no real benefit being shown people are putting off the decision in buying. Because people are not buying, the companies will keep rowing over the best format and the vicious circle will continue while both formats suffer.

And while the battle rages, Sky Movies HD continues to tighten its grip... I have no real interest in either format any more - I'm just looking forward to consuming more HD movies on demand. My money is on HD-DVD to succeed, based on it's a name that the majority of consumers will understand. I genuinely think it'll boil down to that.

I thought that originally, but I suspect it'll be the movies that swing it. Sony had really built up a head of steam before this announcement, and I think the HD DVD name alone has been proven to not have enough power to tip the balance. The interesting thing now is whether Warner Bros will follow Paramount, which could leave Sony in some trouble.

I don't care who wins the format wars, so long as it's not Sony.
