Star Trek sequel: the latest news and rumours

Simon Brew

What’s going on with the next Star Trek film? Here are the very latest rumours…

Published on Nov 19, 2009

It seems to have been a busy couple of weeks for the Star Trek rumour machine, partly as an offshoot of the promotional tour that JJ Abrams has been undertaking for the DVD and Blu-ray release.

That said, there are other pieces of news crawling out of the woodwork about the film, and so here's our latest round-up...

* Bruce Greenwood, who played Captain Pike in the last film, has been expressing his doubts as to whether he'll be appearing in the next one. According to Movieweb, he said, "I know they're writing the film right now, but I'm not sure if we'll see Pike or not. He was mainly there to bring Kirk aboard the Enterprise and it's hard to say if he'll be popping up in the sequel."

* Zoe Saldana, who played Uhura, has also spared some words with Movieweb about the next film. After noting that she wasn't sure where they'd be taking the love triangle between Spock, Uhura and Kirk next, she went on to say, "It would be a lot of fun to have more of the physical element to the character in the new film. I'd love to see her kick some butt."

* Leonard Nimoy has also been talking Star Trek, and has once more suggested that he won't be in the sequel. Furthermore, he says that the sequel doesn't need him, and that he's more than happy to see what Zachary Quinto continues to do in the role.

* Then those Khan rumours keep resurfacing. We're not sure whether we'd want Khan back in another Star Trek film, to be honest. Star Trek isn't Batman, where it's necessary to fight the same specific individual villain over and over, and much though we love Star Trek 2 and Ricardo Montalban, we're not entirely convinced that JJ Abrams should bring the character back. That said, he is one of the very best villains that Star Trek has ever served up, so we're not going to weep either way.

Right now, however, there's no firm idea one way or the other as to whether Khan is in the Star Trek sequel script that's been worked on by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. That hasn't stopped actor Nestor Carbonell - currently featuring as Richard Alpert from Lost - from being heavily linked with the role.

* JJ Abrams hasn't denied or confirmed that Khan is a character being worked into the next film.

* Damon Lindelof has revealed that one thing they are considering for the next Star Trek is playing around with time, possibly including sequences that took place before the action of the last movie.

* JJ Abrams has been playfully coy about directing the next movie, arguing that there's no script yet. We'd be shocked if he didn't, though, and reading between the lines, he's firnly back on board.

* The film won't be happening in 2011, with a release date of summer 2012 the target.
