Call Of Duty movie pressing ahead?

Simon Brew

With Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 still burning up the sales charts, there’s a bit of extra news on the planned movie to report….

Published on Nov 18, 2009

Just a couple of months ago, it was reported that a pair of high profile videogames were to be the latest to make the jump into movies. High profile games to movies have a remarkably consistent track record thus far, of course (they've pretty much all been shit), and thus it was with a mixture of intrigue and suspicion that we met the news that both Spore and Call Of Duty were being lined up.

Now we've got nothing against Spore at all, but the idea of it being a film is a bit of an odd one from where we're sitting. Call Of Duty, however, has the potential to be the basis of something really very special, on the strict proviso that a director is employed whose name isn't Paul, John or Uwe.

And there is some fresh confirmation that a film is happening, too. Talking to The New York Post, actor Kevin McKidd - who voices Captain ‘Soap' MacTavish in Modern Warfare 2 - confirmed that "now there are talks of a feature film". When asked if he would be interested in reprising his role in the movie, McKidd said "If the script is good, and Gerard [Butler] isn't available, then absolutely!"

Last month Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling had revealed on his Twitter account that he was talking game movies with Xavier Gens (who directed the, er, ‘testing' Hitman movie), and Activision has applied for trademarks that cover turning Call Of Duty into a movie. These are all, to be fair, very loose strands, but with McKidd's confirmation that the movie is in the works, we suspect it might not be too long before we hear more of the project...

Please god no......leave it alone. So tired and fed up of videogame adaptions been released as films when 99% of them are utter shite-"Hitman"; "Alone in the Dark"; "Resident Evil"; "Doom" etc: all fucking clunkers.

Please don't do this, please! As a long standing fan of the Call of Duty I can safely say that this'll rubbish... It won't feel like CoD, It wont look like CoD - It just wont be CoD. It'll basically just be a shit war film with a brand sellotaped to it...

Its gonna be garbage! Lets leave the video game conversions please, they have all been either mediocre or utter pants (Doom, Mario Brothers, Double Dragon, Max Payne, Street Fighter, Tomb Raider, etc)
