Ghost Rider 2: new details!

Simon Brew

David Goyer has been spilling the beans about the currently-in-development Ghost Rider 2…

Published on Nov 5, 2009

With his work on X-Men Origins: Magneto unlikely to see the light of day, considering the number of X-Men films currently in production and Magneto's place in the order of priority of them, David Goyer has been finding plenty of other things to keep him busy. Just last week he was confirmed as the sole show runner of the decreasingly interesting FlashForward (and let's hope he can work his magic over the back nine episodes of that show), and now he's been talking - over at MTV - about his plans for Ghost Rider 2.

The first Ghost Rider was a surprisingly sizeable hit, but that hasn't stopped those involved waving the ‘reboot' word around. Goyer, however, told MTV that "it's not exactly a reboot". He added, "I hate to say it's more realistic, because he's got a flaming skull for a head, but it's a bit more stripped down and darker. It's definitely changing tone. What Casino Royale was to the Bond movies, hopefully this will be to Ghost Rider."

Point of order: Er, Casino Royale was a reboot to the Bond movies, surely?

The film, in line with other Marvel projects in development, will be targeting a PG-13 rating, and Goyer has revealed that it picks up eight years after the events of the first film. Ghost Rider 2 won't require you to have seen the first film either - in fact, Goyer goes as far as to say that it'll assume that you haven't. That said, he also noted that the title character is "in a much darker, existential place".

"My script is out there on the Internet," he finished, adding, "we're not changing much from it. It'll be significantly the same script."

Nicolas Cage - who needs the money, if reports from the last day or two are to be believed - will be returning to play Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider. No word yet, though, on when the film will be scorching before the cameras (sorry: bad gag, and it doesn't even make sense. Bah...)

Here's the MTV piece.

Even if the script is better and the director is better, Cage will still manage to pull the same face he pulled throughout the first one.

Oh my god, there is actually a sequel to that embarrassing pile of crap?

If Nick Cage does land the role of Ghost Rider again, I won't be watching this one either.

How old is Nic Cage now? Surely he should have graduated from comic book hero roles to parents of comic book hero roles, or grandparents maybe? Seriously though, just cast someone younger, unless you want to rework the sequel to be set 20 years after the original.

Aw, c'mon, he doesn't LOOK that old! Besides, I think an older Johnny Blaze works much better than a younger, despite the statistical improbability. (Actually, if they worked a stuntman-career-going-to-pot-thus-he-throws-himself-into-SGhostRider-role-with-evertoomuch-vigour angle, it might be more interesting... Pfft, there ya go. Sequel plot.) I didn't have too great a beef with the first one, although I didn't like the fact that Eva stupid Mendes stole my name. Maybe she'll die in the sequel? *hopes*
