Avatar: the brand new international trailer

Does the latest trailer for Avatar improve on the first? And is James Cameron’s incoming film the must-see movie this Christmas?

Published on Oct 29, 2009

At the end of last week, the second trailer for James Cameron's Avatar started playing in cinemas in the US. Running to over three minutes, and looking to answer some of the questions about the film raised by the first (and we're not talking plot points particularly there), it had a whole heap of pressure heaped on its shoulders. For whatever you thought of the first footage from Avatar that's been screened, the general reaction to it on the whole hasn't been what Fox would have been hoping for.

So what about with the longer trailer for the film? Well, that's now appeared online, in international form (and thus with subtitles attached), and courtesy of the fine folks at Trailer Addict, it should be appearing below these words.

Thoughts? Personally, I was more impressed with this one. It obviously spends a lot more time laying down the story, and all the Dances With Wolves comparisons that have been talked about become clear fairly quickly as a result (as do some of the Thundercats parallels!). Will the whole thing work? I've absolutely no idea. The build up looks really interesting, but it's the mid-section that looks like it'll take the film into more dramatic territory that, I'd wager, will establish whether Avatar really gels.

There's little doubting that Mr Cameron puts his money firmly on the screen, though. Appreciating this is a film that's ultimately designed to be seen on a very big screen, and in full-on 3D, watching the trailer in a window on a website may not be the best way to go about this. But if your curiosity is anything like ours, you can see how Avatar is shaping up just below.

The film is out in December, and we'll see you in the queue for it...

AVATAR BASH.... COMMENCE

I quite like the Avater bashing - for too long fan boys have been queuing up to be the first to give a blowjob to movies that haven't even been released. I'd rather be pleasantly surprised that it turned out to be a success, than be told by several million people it's gonne be SUPER AWESOME when they haven't even seen it. My expectations can only be crushed so many times. Please continue.

From the trailer, it looked like another version of the movie, The Battle for Terra. tBfT bombed big time. Will Hollywood ever learn? Probably not. They just throw more money and special effects into a crappy story. I think Avatar had promise and looked fairly decent. But, if the story is all about "bad" human military deforesting/mining some world for money, I won't watch it. Guess time will tell what the story is really about...

I look forward to this movie but unfortunately I feel like this is all a rehash of a theme we've seen before (Ice Age comes to mind for one). It will be a fun ride but now with the storyline revealed and the uncanny comparisons to "Call Me Joe" no amount of hype can get me even slightly excited to see this.

I am so tired of hollywood spending S%^&loads of money, run by execs who would sell their own grandmothers, preaching to us about how terrible the might of the machine is and how we should live our lives caring for each other, the planet etc etc. All in their blockbusters patently designed to make as much money as possible....hypocrisy costing 150 Million ++. BORING. NB the film looks cliche ridden with a plot straight out of a mediocre FPS...oh yeah..that would be the Avatar computer game tie in!!!

Will George Lucas get screen credit? I mean all it boils down to is Ewoks vs The Empire. I said it before, I'll say it again, my interest died the minute I saw 7 ft. tall blue horse people.

I can't wait for Avatar 2: The Squeakquel! Seriously though this movie does look awesome based on the trailers. Too bad the haters don't have anything better to do that gripe about a movie that hasn't come out.

Blimey: this does look like something brilliant and sophisticated. Whilst the internet pours cynicism or excitement all over this I'll just say: Owen from Dodgeball is in this! Whoa!

Blah, blah, blah, whine whine whine. Insult, insult, insult. Personally I think this looks like it could be a great film. The trailer is a really solid one, and although I'm still not sold on the promise that this film would be revolutionary on a visual basis, the visuals certainly don't look badly done. In fact, they look very well done indeed in my opinion. The only major problem with this trailer is that it seems to give away too much of the story, which is a common problem nowadays, but it's early days yet, and that assumption could easily be wrong.

Hmm, the first trailer did little for me. That however made me want to see it. Don't know how good it'll be, but I definately want to know.

This trailer is much better than the other one. I for one think this movie is taking quite an epic approach at a supposedly cliche story. Industrialization and modernity vs nature and mysticism. But even though cliche, is still looks to be quite interesting. Im excited. And im not gonna write this one off before i see it.

I loved this movie when I first saw it! Then it was called Pocahontas, I recall. I wonder what weird aliens will represent the dog and the raccoon?

I hate you all. "it looks just like this other film I saw" - really? Wow, based on a 3 minute trailer you obviously know everything. Or are you talking about narrative theory, saying all stories are basically the same? Probably not, ur all just reverse fan boys."it's got trees! Already seen it" "its got fighting, already seen it" "the first trailer had no plot" "the 2nd trailer had too much plot" "it's got an indiginous species! Already seen George Lucas do that poorly" "all these fan boys are saying how great it will be? How can u know how good it will be without seeing it? This film will suck" "not a computer game tie in! Anything but that! I have played computer game spin off of other movies that were neither avatar nor made by ubisoft, but without playing avatar the game I know it sucks". I hate u. Ps. I saw the trailer yesterday for the Battle For Terra before either Up or 9 (saw both so can't remember which) and I turned to the gf n said "looks like Avatar for kids". It doesn't mean I can't differentiate between the 2!
