Independence Day: the sequel?

Simon Brew

Roland Emmerich spills the beans on the Independence Day sequel that may yet happen…

Published on Oct 13, 2009

As he continues to do press ahead of the release of his end-of-the-world effects thriller 2012, director Roland Emmerich has been asked by Latino Review about the state of a sequel to Independence Day. As the site notes, this was a project that, back in 2008, Fox said was basically being held up by the director.

So Latino Review put that to him, and got a slightly different take on matters. "Dean Devlin and I are still set to make a sequel likely because we've found some sort of idea," he said. "We approached Fox, and Fox has not quite figured out how to incorporate Dean's and my deal, and Will's [Smith] deal."

He then talked about how the studio had talked about doing the film without Will Smith, presumably to help cut down on the budget, but Emmerich seems to have put his foot down on the matter. "It's in limbo and lately the studios are fighting," he notes, going on to say, "So we'll see what happens. I would love to do it".

He does also, as part of the piece, confirm that there's a story already in place should the green light button be pressed.

From where we sit, mind - and feel free to disagree - it never really occurred to us that getting Will Smith back on board was a vital component of Independence Day 2. Truthfully, when we talk about the original film, it's more a chat about the movie's effects than even acknowledging that Will Smith was even in it. That's nothing against Will Smith, it's just one of those kind of movies. Factor in that Smith wasn't really a global star in quite the same way back in 1996 when the film came out, and we're finding ourselves oddly sympathetic to Fox's position.

You can find the Latino Review piece here.

*YAY* for Will Smith, anything that holds up another CGI laden snooze fest from Emmerich is worth celebrating. The sooner hollywood falls out of love with CGI over plot the better!

This is possibly the last film i'd ever want to see being made. I'd rather watch static than a sequel to a film I thought was a perfect example of what is wrong with modern cinema. (Rant over, I feel better already)

Independence Day remains the most disappointing film I have ever seen. They can make a sequel, but I won't be in line for it.

Why not make a movie where disaster movies come together and battle it out? Godzilla versus the ID4 aliens vs impossible global freezing vs earthquakes. Imagine how much shit you can blow up then! All you have to do is get a big name celebrity that is in the middle of all the total destruction that is somehow able to survive without a scratch. Also, throw in an American President that is black or of Asian decent who is a woman and is paralyzed to a wheelchair to play the "Oh see just as we were becoming a tolerant society" card.

No need for big Will to save the day again! He would be better off doing Bad Boys 3. In ID4 vol.2, Jeff Goldblum could return with former president Bill Pullman and lab rat Brent Spiner to explore the new alien conspiracy. Combined, they cost less than a third of Will's paycheck. The UFO's can bomb the Mount Rushmore heads for shock effect. KA-BOOOOOM!!!!

Emmerich, Smith and ID4 Part 2. This ads up to 3 reasons why I will be staying home should this film ever get made.

It seems possible that the reason he's so keen on bringing back Will Smith is because the story he came up with centers around his character and he thinks (perhaps rightly) that it would ruin things if they replaced him with another actor to play the same part. It seems like the obvious choice to make the second one about aliens coming again, and the world turning to Will Smith because he's the one who initially helped stop them.

Personally, I could see this being an interesting story. It would be impossible for every alien to have been killed at the same time(and to outrun a nuclear blast, hack an alien computer, pilot an alien spaceship perfectly, etc.). The cleanup would take YEARS and this movie could chronicle some of the problems they run into.

Well, its a global issue - So why do we/they need Will Smith?? it would be naff for the world to rely on one man again, the same man, yawn....

I like Will Smith and I enjoyed the movie. However, I think the movie worked because it was an ensemble cast, not a "Will Smith" movie. All the characters were interesting and could hold your attention. So, that leaves getting a new story. "New" is the key word here, it can't be about another alien invasion threatening the Earth, that's the old story. But what else is there for it to be about?

I quite liked the film too although I'm not fussed about re-watching it or getting the DVD. I think it stands best alone though without a sequel. It works best as a one off cataclysmic event.
