Brand new trailer for 2012

Roland Emmerich brings the world to an end, as the new trailer for 2012 is revealed…

Published on Oct 8, 2009

Next month, Roland Emmerich will be plying the big screen with another cavalcade of special effects with his end-of-the-world action thriller 2012.

Arriving a full month before Avatar tries to mop up the end-of-the-year science fiction market, Emmerich's film brings together John Cusack, Thandie Newton, Woody Harrelson (it could yet turn out to be his year, with Zombieland under his belt too), Amanda Peet and Oliver Platt.

But with Emmerich's movies, it's generally the special effects that set the tongues wagging (although 10,000 BC might be the exception to that rule), and the brand new second full-length trailer for 2012 seems to indicate that's going to be the same again here. To be fair, some of the effects work in this trailer look really impressive, and we hope they translate to the big screen as well, when every little detail is exposed. So far though so good.

Take a look and see what you think. Then the date to mark in your diary is 13th November...

Having seen the trailers the effects do without a doubt look impressive, but after the initial view there are some niggly things that stand out to me of . 1. The start when they're driving along in their camper van like they have no worries in the world, and yet when the camera pulls away it's like hell on Earth. How could you not know that was going on behind you!! 2. When huge slabs of Earth are breaking off in to the ocean, I find weird that the ocean seems surprisingly calm given there's millions of tons of Earth being moved. 2. When the JFK aircraft carrier is about to land on the White House, there's a helicopter on the bow of the ship that looks like it's pirouetting even as the ship is at 90 degrees. aircraft seem to be just going round in circles instead of just falling/sliding off the deck. Even some of the other aircraft look like they're struggling to fall off deck. For me little things like that spoil films nowadays. If you're going to use effects at least make them realistic. As was mentioned in the main feature, Emmerich's movies do tend to be laden with special effects, but if a film is going to be driven by effects then at least get them right instead of just looking pretty. Personally I don't have high expectations for the film.

White House destroyed? Check. Famous landmarks destroyed in an awesome fashion? Check. A small group of main characters that impossibly dodge certain destruction? Check. It's basically the same movie for a third time. Spoilers: Movie ends with most of the earth in shambles but a large enough group of humanity survives with great hope for the future.

The End is the Beginning is it? So 2012 will deal with the months AFTER the disaster, as those on the "ships the goverment built" try to keep civilisation alive in a drowned world? Hmmm. Place your bets now for the last scene to be the day after the big wave, with John Cusack and family watching a bird a twig in its mouth fly towards the ship.

If it's anything like The Day After Tomorrow, we'll get 5 minutes of cool FX and then 2 hours of John Cusack walking through the snow.

Actually, it looked more like he was walking through volcanic ash, but what do I know? Anyway...HOLY SHIITE MUSLIM!!! I'll be first in line for this one!! Sure, I don't like when they put all the best bits in the trailers, but man, what bits!! My favorite is the Sistine Chapel. The crack obviously represents the break--now coming--between God and man. Quite moving, that. And, to my untrained eye, it looks like the planes and 'copters would have been mostly held down by inertia. You have to realize waves that size are propelling the ship at hundreds of mph, yes? And, with the chunks of coastline falling into the ocean, we're seeing it from several miles off. With that, what you'd probably end up seeing is the ocean rising, pretty much as a whole, while the land appears to sink slowly. Both those effects would almost cancel each other giving pretty much the look you saw in the shot. To my untrained eye, anyway. Whatever it turns out to be, I’ll be there. And I HOPE it’s not like The Day After Tomorrow. I want at least 15 minutes of cool FX. :-)

As long as the film doesn't take up over half its running time with people seeking to discover what's going on/government conspiracy ("Ele" from Deep Impact anyone?) and the last bit of 2012 being what we see in the trailer. Now that WOULD be a disaster
