A Nightmare On Elm Street remake: the first trailer

Simon Brew

Meet the new Freddie Krueger, as the first Nightmare On Elm Street remake trailer arrives…

Published on Sep 28, 2009

Many of you, we suspect, are expecting the worst here.

The remake of A Nightmare On Elm Street - or Freddie Begins, as the trailer suggests - hasn't been the film that too many people were crying out to see, not least considering its iconic position amongst 80s horror movies. A big title card booming home that this is from "Producer Michael Bay" doesn't exactly ice the cake either.

The trailer for the film that's just been released, though, isn't too bad. Granted, there's probably an element of suppressed expectations, and there are large chunks of it that could be transposed from any homogenous horror movie of your choosing. However, there are some neat moments, and you also get the reveal of the new Freddie right at the end.

See what you think, and be sure to leave your thoughts on it in the comments below...

Ahh what the hell, can't be any worse than most of the so-called-horror garbage we get each Hallowe'en. Hopefully they dont let the inevitable sequels descend into drivel as quickly as the originals did... 'Freddy' 2 was on TV a few months back and it was awful. Hilarious, but dire.

What's up with his voice, does he have a speech inpediment?? A burnt vocal coard?? It looks promising, with the return of the bath tub and nightmare sets but he can't even speak properly or creepy...

1.55 is the only real look we get.. I agree his voice is weird.. his burns look more realistic.. but they too look odd to me.. maybe becuase I'm not used to Freddy looking like that.

I'm actually looking forward to this. I was 10 when Nancy and company faced off with Freddy in the original. I still remember seeing it on HBO for the first time. To this day I cannot fall sleep on my back thanks to Johnny Depp's demise lol. Or maybe it's the deviated septum...? Either way, I will never forget the feelings associated with that first film seen through my eyes as a child and I hope this one lives up to the potential. Can't be any worse than Saw, can it?

What's up with the beginning? Are they trying to evoke some sympathy for the Son of 100 Maniacs? Gotta say, though, I'm digging Jackie Earle Haley since Watchmen. If they were going to cast anyone as Freddy, I'm glad it was him. The man himself looks pretty good, considering. His skin looks tightened, and his lips are pretty well gone, which would explain the voice. Looking forward to this a lot more than whatever Saw garbage is being thrown at us this year.

i like the look of the beginning. adding the question of whether freddy was even guilty of the crimes he was charged with - which would make his terrorising of the elm street children even more intriguing. it certainly looks better than the TCM and Friday 13th remakes. and a concept that could actually benefit from modern slick production values, rather than losing the lo-fi grime that made the originals so affecting.

boy, i dont know about this. first and foremost, michael bay. i dont even need to qualify that. just saying that name sums it all up. look at how loyal he was to the transformers franchise and how sensitive he was to its loyal fans. im sure he will be just as loving in his re-telling of this story. maybe all of the clothes in the movie will be blatantly from abercrombie and fitch or freddies claws will have sponsors on them like boxers trunks. cant wait.

Not bad. But the Elmer Fudd voice has got to go! Good to see Clancy Brown.

Riding the coattail of Rob Zombie's success on John Carpenter's 'Halloween' remake, talk was began to go around over 'A Nightmare on Elm Street remake , and to top it off Robert Englund will not be playing the smart- sweater-wearing charred fiend, Freddie Kruger. This really hits me hard because this is the only Wes Craven film I do like and the originality of Freddie compared to the silent slow walking slashers such as Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees.
