Fox reboots Fantastic Four

Martin Anderson

With legal obligations to make a new FF movie or lose the rights to do so, Fox are to flame on pretty soon in the wake of the last attempt...

Published on Sep 1, 2009

Fox is to reboot the Fantastic Four franchise under the supervision of I Am Legend and Jonah Hex producer Akiva Goldman, with Heroes co-executive producer Michael Green writing the script, according to Variety.

Fox's unusual hold over the Marvel-originated franchise means that it can't sit endlessly on the property and wait for the memory of the two Gruffudd/Alba movies (in 2005 and 2007) to recede before tackling a new FF movie.

It's not the first time that legal issues have advanced a Fantastic Four movie up the schedule either - Roger Corman's famously awful £1 million 1994 adaptation was made in order to retain rights in the property, and in fact 20th Century Fox has similar 'use-em-or-lose'em' obligations with franchises such as X-Men, Silver Surfer and Daredevil, the latter two scheduled for their own imminent Fox reboots (the Silver Surfer having featured in the 2nd Fantastic Four movie in 2007).

Personally I think the two recent movies, starring Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis had a lot going for them, and that it would be enough to write a third movie in the franchise that simply had a better script and a bit more respect for the original stories and characters (no more bendy dancing from Reed Richards, for instance).

The first two were terrible in my opinion, but they were more family friendly than the other marvel movies.

> This is almost as bad as the news that Superman Returns was to be rebooted the year after it came out. Seriously, Hollywood. Enough with the 'rebooting'. If your franchise is flagging, don't you think that might be because people are losing interest in it in general, not because of anything to do with this specific incarnation of it? People won't like it any more if you make it younger and edgier. Stop it. Stop it. Stop it.

What's up with those frakking "use-em-or-lose'em obligations"? Feels more like hurry-up-and-abuse-em!! Both FF's were nice PG-13 family entertainment, maybe hated by hard-core comics fans but for me two funfilled rollercoasters. The current cast does have a decent fanbase. Making a quick profit on some rushed clone only results in losing credibility with moviefans, so DON'T push that dumb reboot-button!!!

@ Frenky, I agree while I personally disliked the 2 FF movies I'm in my mid 20's. Children require family orientated comic book movies. I would hate to see a dark FF film which post Dark Knight, it would most certainly be.

I liked the first one, didn't see the second one, but the cast worked pretty well so I think a better script would be better than jettisoning the whole thing.

Eventually Hollywood will reboot movies so new they haven't even come out yet, at which time we'll finally get original movies.

First film was a good laugh. Second film was okay, but lacked humour. I'd like to see a third film done properly, rather than just give up on another marvel franchise.

I wasn't really a fan of either but I can see what they were trying to do. In my opinion they wanted to put a "safe" Marvel superhero movie out there. Something that kids of all ages could go to see, and I think the Fantastic Four were perfect for that. I'd love to see a continuation of that if everyone was on board with it. If not then I say let the license lapse and don't try to shovel more drivel down our throats.

Well, the couldn't be any worse than the first two, could they?

Well, at least there's a chance for a proper Dr Doom this time round! Seriously though, rebooting franchises so quickly is ridiculous. Hulk was justified because Ang Lee was a very poor choice for helming a superhero blockbuster in the first place (even though the new Hulk film was probably even worse)...but I can't see people swallowing this. Just make a 3rd FF film and have done with it!

Incredible Hulk wasn't really a reboot - more a recast with no reference to the previous movie, but it still happened. There is no NEED to reboot this franchise, as much as it pains me, I agree with Martin. All it needs is a damned good script. Maybe it's time to bring the skrulls into the Marvel Movie Universe...

Andybee- YES! Great idea, either that or the Subterraneans. I personally hated the first but really liked the second (apart from giant cloud Galactus) so would definitely make the trip to see a 3rd. Lots of banter, plenty of clobberin' time and some Skrulls would do nicely.

I'm a Dad and the FF movies worked great for the audience they were aimed at. Kids. The original FF comics were never masterpieces but they had a ton of ideas. None of which have been used successfully in the movies which is probably why the fanboys cry so much about it. Fox will never let it go as its an easy franchise to make a movie for as kids will lap up whatever comes out regardless of quality.
