Disney buys Marvel for $4 billion

The Mouse is gunning for the young male consumer market, and it's willing to pay...

Published on Aug 31, 2009

Thanks to DoG regular Ron Hogan for bringing this up on this sleepy bank holiday Monday in blightey - turns out that Marvel Entertainment is firmly in the sights of Walt Disney, which has announced that it intends to buy the growing entertainment giant for an amazing four billion dollars.

The grim old X-Men will be keeping company with Mickey Mouse and friends under the deal proposed - truly a staggering investment, and something that is going to shake up the entertainment industry and set forums ablaze for weeks.

Disney, reports Reuters, has always been looking for new commercial in-roads to the young male consumer market. The company has a history of producing interesting experiments such as The Black Hole (1979) and TRON (1982), without ever really getting a feel for their target audience.

Now it seems that The Mouse has decided to take a costly shortcut and just buy up the company most-beloved of adolescent males worldwide (outside of the Hefner empire).

It's a pretty safe bet that whatever Marvel are doing right (quite a lot), Disney are going to want it to keep doing just that.

"(Marvel's) audience is surprisingly broad." says Disney Chief Financial Officer Tom Staggs. "It transcends gender and age and has real potential worldwide. They skew a little more toward boys than many of our properties...We at Disney had admired them because of their position and asset base. With conversations over time, we came to believe in the value of a combination."

Disney buys Marvel Comics! So I guess all the books will now feature 2 to 3 obnoxious, little sidekick characters and musical numbers? This may happen for the upcoming Marvel movies as well. I now fully expect to see Spider Ham making appearances in all the Spiderman books, and Thor belting out the show tunes in his upcoming film all the while hanging with dancing trolls and dwarfs.

Normally, I'd be pissed about something like this. However, I think I'll reserve judgement because of how well the Pixar buyout went. I'm just hoping that Mickey doesn't hand out beatings to Marvel stars who don't want to sell sex to little girls.

I can't see the benefits in this deal. Guess we will have to wait and see...

There are benefits for both sides of this deal. Marvel gets Disney's money to produce movies in house, and Disney gets Marvel's market share of males ages 4-18 and the incredibly lucrative ToyBiz.

Disney co. lost its magic touch since Katzenberg left to start Dreamworks. The house of the mouse is now at least smart enough to take over growth companies with fresh original material like Pixar.

Myself I am delighted that Squirrel girl may finally get her own comic.

there's a lot of potential here and the best things I've heard is that Marvel will not have to cut titles that get critical acclaim but sail too close to not being profitable. Also there's more likelihood of synergy with the recently launched Disney XD channel which means more animation and possibly some live action shows that fit that demographic. Also with Disney also owning ABC there's no reason why we can't see a pilot per season on genre shows based around Marvel properties. Luke Cage/Jessica Jones TV show anyone?
