Is this The Running Man for a new generation? We check out the trailer for the new film from the gents who brought you Crank...

Video games and films have a somewhat rocky history so it was with baited breath that I watched this trailer for a film with an intriguing premise
Gamer takes place in the near future (a sci-fi movie staple) where virtual reality has taken on a fantastic new form. Controlling real life death row inmates in real life situations, the trailer gives more than a nod to one of Arnie's greatest, The Running Man, with the brilliant Michael C Hall taking on the role of the game's creator. Audiences cheer and revel in the bloodlust, leading man Gerard Butler does buff very well and there are more explosions in two minutes than I remember seeing in a long time.
Gritty film stock, whispered one-liners - Hall's "You're mine, boy" is somehow glorious - and a brief clip of what could be a crazy dance scene make this another top class trailer to break through in recent weeks. In cinemas next month (4 September in UK and US), it looks to be a whole load of fun. And guns, bangs and car crashes. Aces.
