10 things I never want to see again in movies

Mark Pickavance

Some things are just plain wrong. Mark’s created a list of the worst cinematic faux pas that should never be repeated…

Published on Jul 13, 2009

Clint Eastwood singing

It happened once in Paint Your Wagon, and it was a terrible mistake that should never be seen or heard again. Period.

Nic Cage in an animal outfit

I've enjoyed some of Nic's movies, especially The Rock and even Con Air, but he doesn't work well inside an animal costume, especially when the movie is as abysmal as The Wicker Man remake. Nic, just don't do it.

Bat nipples

I had to include these, as there is no feasible way around them. Batmen don't need nipples or any other anatomical accessory on their outfits. If Christian Bale appears, smuggling Kevlar peanuts, then I'll be leaving the movie at that point.

Denise Richards

Nothing more to say, really. Other than if you like Denise, please feel free to substitute Rob Schneider.

Will Smith trying to be serious

There are some movies with Will Smith in that I like, but the worst ones he makes are those where he's trying to be a serious actor. Actually, thinking about that, and specifically Wild Wild West, he can also be painful to watch trying to be funny..

Eddie Murphy in a fat suit

Even as a proportionally-challenged person myself, I chuckled a little during The Nutty Professor, but enough is enough. I don't want to see another slim person putting on latex to do farting jokes, ever. Martin Lawrence and Mike Myers take note. The same goes for you!

Another Clouseau movie

Peter Sellers died in 1980. Can we just accept that sad fact? Alan Arkin had a stab at Inspector Clouseau while Sellers was still alive. Others have tried and more recently Steve Martin has sullied his reputation trying to do the same. Clouseau should be put to rest.

Madonna cameo

I say ‘cameo', but let's be honest. Even if she's the lead character in a movie, she plays it like she's doing a walk-on piece. I still have nightmares about her appearance in Die Another Day. Madge, stay away from the camera.

Dakota Fanning screaming

I presume on Miss Fanning's resume it says ‘special abilities: can scream'. The noise she made through most of the War Of The Worlds made the Body Snatchers wail seem positively melodic. I'll only see her movies now if they promise on the poster that she doesn't scream at any point in the story.

TV remakes

We've had a few decent ones but the majority of these have been utter garbage, the worst being My Favourite Martian, Lost In Space, I Spy, Scooby Doo, Dukes Of Hazzard and the aforementioned Wild Wild West. Now news comes to me they want to remake the Shatner-tastic T.J. Hooker! Film financers, just say ‘no'.

Madonna in Four Rooms - what the fuck was going on there. Also, I don't mind Denise Richards as long as she's climbing out of my bed - even if she does have an eternal look on her face that's a cross between confusion and smelling slightly off milk.

Sorry I thought Will Smith brought off I am Legend very well. I would rather see more of that than MiB 3...

actually Clint Eastwood is a very good singer. He even released a record long before he ever did Paint you wagon (I think it was off the back of Rawhide) and Will Smith did serious well in Ali.

Will Smith was good in I Am Legend, it's just that the film itself was pants. I haven't seen the Omega Man, so I can't compare it to that, but even compared to it's modern day counterpart 28 Days Later, it was rubbish. The infected or whatever they were meant to be were about as scary as hedgehogs, partially cos the CGI was rubbish, but also because the premise didn't make any sense. If we can avoid another Hancock, that would be greatly appreciated - it takes a lot for me to turn something off, but that was gone within 20 mins of pressing play!

Clint Eastwood also sang in Honkytonk Man , an under appreciated film of his. He's been singing from time to time since then on some of his movies, though usually off screen, that is as part of the soundtrack. He surely isn't Elvis Presley but he's definitely as bad a singer as Tom Waits or Bob Dylan [both of which I really like, just not for their singing voices].

I agree with all those! except: Denise Richards? What's wrong with her? She's a hottie. Will Smith? Why not just say it as you mean it: Ban Will Smith full stop, comedy, serious, or otherwise :-) And Mr. Steve Martin? I'm afraid he has no reputation left. He's in it for the money these days, and his "family friendly" persona I'm afraid just doesn't cut it. To think he used to be so unafraid and experimental in his roles. In fact - you might as well add Robert Deniro and Al "Shouty" Pacino to that list. And Chevy Chase. And anyone who has sold out :-(

I wouldn't ban all De Niro and Pachino movies as they do do some good stuff, the last one they did together Righteous Kill was a superb movie.

will smith proved himself a capable dramatic actor 16 years ago with six degrees of separation. he has continued to prove himself with films like ali, the pursuit of happiness and seven pounds. he was even decent in i am legend and enemy of the state. i would rather see him do a dramatic film than a comedy......

What about remakes of remakes? Even if they turn out okay they're bad on principle. Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, I Am Legend (or The Last Man On Earth), Godzilla, there is even talk of a 3rd version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre in 3D. So stupid!

There also should be a law against making movies from video games. Whoever liked Super Mario Brothers The Movie was not really awake. It gets much worse after that. Final Fantasy was a big deal in its day for the CGI stuff, but it's not a well made movie. Laura Croft:Tomb Raider? More like Laura Crotch Shot:Tomb Raider. Angelina Jolie's crotch was the only really watchable thing there. Doom was particularly sad, as was even the first Resident Evil, despite the fact that Milla Jovovich is nice to look at. Can't we just leave the banal eye candy where it belongs---at the opposite end of a game pad cord?
