Watchmen: five discs DVD set coming in December

Simon Brew

Watchmen arrives on DVD shortly - but is the release worth picking up the one that's coming in December?

Published on Jul 10, 2009

We're a couple of weeks away now from the DVD and Blu-ray release of Zack Snyder's Watchmen movie, and as has been promised around the time of the theatrical release, there's a whole lot more on the way.

Out later this month is the theatrical release of the film, and there's also a director's cut version out at the same time. But for the full Watchmen cut, with the animated Tales Of The Black Freighter story woven in (the same Tales Of The Black Freighter that's already had a standalone DVD release, December is when you need to wait until.

Before we get into the detail, I like that Warner Bros has made this information available now. Granted, it's done so by including a leaflet in US copies of the Watchmen DVD, so some will only find out once they've bought the first disc, which isn't ideal. But it's not been a secret that a more integrated cut is on the way, and it's over at The HD Room that fuller details of what's coming up have been revealed.

The site has picked up an advance copy of Watchmen, and inside discovered the promotional leaflet, which not only reveals the longer cut, but also that Zack Snyder and Dave Gibbons will contribute a commentary track, and that there's over two hours of further bonus features included too. The promotional sheet also mentions the complete Watchmen motion comics, which also saw an individual release earlier this year.

To see the leaflet that Warner Bros included, head over to The HD Room. And that just leaves you to decide whether you want to end up with a couple of copies of Watchmen on your shelf, or whether it's worth holding of for the five-disc epic. Assuming you want a copy of the film, of course...

Waiting? MORE waiting? Moan. I thought they said originally that the shiny, special edition would be out in July! I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, but talk about blatantly going for the doubledip! Guess I know what's going on my Xmas list.

So no Alan Moore commentary then? That would have been sweet.

Why's everyone so surprised? Warner Bros. obviously need to make their money back from the obscene pay out they had to give 20th Century Fox.

stuxmusic : I imagine it would be a solid 3 hours of beeps to cover the expletives he would lay upon the film. I imagine that if he ever watched it, he would be happier with how this turned out as opposed to the other film abortions made from his stories. I am caught in the middle on this. I did not care for the theatrical cut, but I am interested to see the extras and TotBF cut into the film as it should have been. I am hoping to come away from it happier this time.

"Moan. I thought they said originally that the shiny, special edition would be out in July!" There's another release after the special edition. That's the 5 disk version they're referring too. So there's 3 versions of the film in all. Theatrical cut. Director's Cut (with more stuff added) and an Ultimate Cut which includes the Black Freighter stuff incorporated. And a few other extra bits I think. I'll probably wait, but I can't help thinking the BF stuff would be best viewed separately. Hopefully other versions of the film will be included in the Ultimate release though. (At 5 disks I'd hope so!)

@MarvMarble: my hope is that some of the extra scenes will include the newsstand owner and the comic kid. Otherwise the addition of TotBF will not make sense cut into the film. Obviously it is meant to mirror the development of the other characters, but without delving into those two, it will severely contrast against the rest of the movie, in my opinion.

5 DVD 'Watchmen' box coming out in 2009.12

Oh, Yesss! Everybody LOVES to change DVDs in the middle of the film! Also, 5 x 4.36 GB = 21.80 GB. A video BluRay can have up to 50 GB. And if you buy a Collector's Edition Box for every movie you like, you will have a full DVD cabinet and an empty wallet.
