Den Of Geek loves Ted Raimi

Hazel takes time out to salute Sam Raimi's brother, Ted, a man who can steal a scene at 20 paces...

Ted Raimi is the underrated brother of Sam Raimi. Whereas Sam shows his talent behind the camera, Ted has been acting on film and in TV since 1981. He's part of the legendary combo of Raimis, Campbell and Tapert.

He successfully made the transition to TV star with guest parts in Alf, Baywatch, Twin Peaks and Alien Nation before becoming a cast member on his most well known shows of Seaquest DSV and Xena. Only Ted Raimi, Jonathan Brandis and Don Franklin were in all three series of Seaquest, in spite of multiple cast changes and a loss of direction in the show.

In Xena, he later developed an army of loyal fans for his character, Joxer. His recurring role was so popular with fans that he appeared in over 40 episodes and had his own theme tune, Joxer the Mighty! His comic timing with Renee O'Connor as his unrequited love interest Gabrielle was amusing, as was his relationship with Xena played brilliantly deadpan by Lucy Lawless.

His most recent TV appearance screened in the UK was his guest appearance on Supernatural in an episode where a wishing well grants wishes but with an undesired response. Ted is a guy who wishes for a hot girl to fall in love with him but the wish goes a bit wrong and he's got a super clingy girlfriend to get away from. It's such a funny episode, which also features a six foot tall drunk, depressed, suicidal teddy bear - what's not to like!?

Ted isn't just successful in TV. He has also starred in a variety of movies ranging from the family friendly fare of the Spider-Man films to horror films including Candyman, Evil Dead, Skinner and The Grudge. He also regularly collaborates with Sam Raimi with a cameo here and there, including Drag Me to Hell where he played the doctor as well as being a regular co-star to Bruce Campbell.

Think of his scene-stealing performance in Screaming Brain and his multiple parts in My Name Is Bruce. My favourite Ted Raimi performance was his starring role in Lunatics:  A Love Story.  He and Deborah Foreman had such good chemistry and a story that could easily have been a creepy, sleazy film was played by them with an almost naïve charm. He, Sam and Bruce, have stayed true to their independent roots and Ted has just premiered the new short My Treat, which he directed. If it's anything like as good as his last short, Extra, Extra, then it's us who will be getting the treat!

I think what I and so many other fans like about Ted Raimi is that he is a geek just like that rest of us and for that reason, among many others: Ted Raimi, Den Of Geek salutes you!

He was a mapmaker who made some magic maps in an episode of Legend of the Seeker, too.

A little bit of nepotism doesn't do no harm :-) Reminds me of Clint Howard, who regularly appears in Ron Howard movies. And yes, he's another geeky cult favourite!
