How recutting existing films could be the answer to the remake crisis

Gaye Birch

Office Space as a slasher movie? The Shining as a romcom? How five films have been given a different life...

Published on Jun 17, 2009

We may have found it: the cure for sequelitis, remakeosis and chronic reboot syndrome!

It's long been apparent that the well has run dry in Tinsel Town and overdipping has putrified the proverbial spring. Those rehydrated projects Hollywood hopes will engage and entrance audiences only enrage fans of classic films and threaten to taint already perfect childhood memories. Those few rooting for the do-overs of recently announced projects are lonely tumbleweeds in an arid, barren desert - round these parts, anyway.

Rather than dredge up bad feeling over the remake wasteland, we've instead discovered a swelling pool of untapped, inspired, sparkling fresh talent bubbling up over at YouTube. If you're going to remake something, really remake it, we say.

If even a few of these sources could be syphoned into the movie machine, we think good times at the flicks just might flow again.

See what you think of these rehatchings, built solely from the ashes of dusty trailers...

The Shining: A romantic comedy

Office Space: A slasher thriller

Zombie West Side Story

Scary Mary Poppins

You'll need to have seen the 1973 Edward Woodward (say that 3 times fast!) original and the 2006 Nicolas Cage remake to fully appreciate this next bash.

It almost makes the abominable rehash worth chewing through. We said 'almost'.

The Wicker Man 3: A kooky comedy

What about 'Ten Things I Hate About Commandments'? Samuel L Jackson as Principal Firebush is arguably the best thing ever!

Then again there's always the technique of making sequels out of bits of other movies http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vD4OnHCRd_4 (this was the first thing I ever saw on Youtube)

That's pretty hilarious. And frankly given how sick i am with the whole reboot/prequel/sequel state of Hollywood, a breath of fresh air. I'd see scary Mary Poppins!

Gore Story was a good one, where they re-cut Toy Story to be like Saw.
