What happens when you scan the Google barcode?
Simon Brew
Google's logo today is a barcode - but what happens when you scan it?
Published on Oct 7, 2009
Granted, this may be me getting just a little bit too geeky for my own good, but when I saw that Google's front page today was a picture of a barcode, just one thought went through my head: what would happen if you scanned it?
Turns out, you get the result you see up at the top right there. It comes up with Googleg.
My work here is done.
With thanks to DataSymbol.com and their online barcode reader

I still dong know what it means. What the hell is a Googleg? Also, I find it funny that i contemplated leaving a comment on the Dan Atkinson interview yesterday asking when there was going to be a new post in the misc column....

I presume it's Google, and then the scanning software has added a G at the end? That's my best guess :-)

My modified CueCat scans it as "gOOGLE", lower-case g followed by capital OOGLE. Then again, I did scan it directly off the screen rather than print it and scan it on paper, so that could be affecting the scan.

I believe the extra "g" at the end is the checksum. I scanned it with a Symbol MC9060 and it showed up as "Google" with no extra characters. However, this barcode reader only reads the checksum to verify the barcode's correctness and does not display it.
Just so you know, this barcode was done in a subset of Bar128 known as Bar128B. (At least, that is the form that gives "g" as the checksum character.)

WARNING: DO NOT READ THIS BARCODE WITH A BARCODE SCANNER.
Google have overlooked a well-known issue here.
If you have a standard (Code 3 of 9) barcode scanner, It will reprogram your barcode scanner only to accept meaningless barcodes made up out of interlocking spirals. Normal barcodes will result in error messages which contain long tracts of text from Mills & Boon novels, not something you want appearing on your cash register with a busy line of customers waiting to be served. This is due to the fact that it's a Code 128 barcode, and there is interference with the training barcodes you get on a card with every scanner, which are used to reprogram the wand.
